Inspired by the legendary phoenix, Firebirds blends Randall Standridge’s original material with themes from Stravinsky’s Firebird, creating a powerful and accessible new chapter in The unBroken Project. Exploring themes of rebirth, resilience, and renewal, this work offers a musical reflection on overcoming adversity. Powerful rhythms, colorful harmonies, active percussion, and soaring melodies combine as the music builds toward an uplifting and triumphant conclusion. Firebirds provides an excellent opportunity to introduce young musicians to Stravinsky while delivering an emotionally impactful performance. A stirring addition to any concert program, this piece reminds us that from challenge comes strength, and from ashes, we rise.

originally written for string orchestra, snowflake is now rescored for wind band and presents a beautiful, flowing melody that captures the delicate and fleeting nature of a snowflake. the piece features long, lyrical phrases and rich harmonies that should be played with warmth and expression. the primary focus is on creating a singing sound and allowing the music to "breathe," providing a gentle, serene atmosphere throughout.

Lively, rhythmic, and full of energy, Cumbia by Jorge Vargas is a vibrant Grade 1.5–2 work that introduces young musicians to the infectious spirit of Latin American dance music. Based on the Northern Mexican variation of the cumbia, this piece features distinctive bass line patterns, engaging percussion writing, and an irresistible groove that students will love. A fun and educational way to explore cultural styles, Cumbia is a crowd-pleasing addition to any concert program that’s sure to get toes tapping—and maybe even a few people dancing!

Honor the legacy of the warrior class Samurai with Bushido, a powerful work by William Owens for first-year bands! Bold and energetic from beginning to end, the music embodies the virtuous code by which the Samurai warrior lived. Justice, courage, mercy, honor, loyalty, character---this work portrays it all and more! (1:30)

Tender and expressive, Home is a lyrical Grade 1.5 work by Katie O’Hara LaBrie that explores the many meanings of the word “home.” With rich harmonies, flowing lines, and emotionally sensitive writing, the piece reflects on home as a place, a feeling, and a journey—sometimes comforting, sometimes complex, but always deeply personal. Anchored by a constant, memorable melody, Home invites young musicians to connect with the music and consider where they find strength, safety, and belonging. A moving and meaningful addition to any concert or festival program.

Historically late autumn is a celebration of the end of the harvest, a time to enjoy the fruits of labor, share our abundance with others, and gather to celebrate and exchange our culture and experiences. My goal was to capture the essence of the season, so in the arranging of the two songs in this work, I selected traditional songs with a rich and significant history The first song, Alabado, is a Spanish word that literally translated means “song of thanksgiving”. The second song, Lac qui Parle. is a tune notated and given lyrics by Joseph Renville, whose mother was Sioux Indian and father was French Canadian. The tune is among the world’s most widely known melodies of American Indian origin, and I included it to honor Native Americans. Lac qui Parle literally translates to “lake that talks”, and in addition to being the name of the song, was a mission in which the Sioux Indians’ Dakota language was written and parts of the Bible were translated. This composition includes the opportunity to use a variety of “found” percussion, specifically brass bells from home. I scavenged these when making the reference recording from my mom’s holiday decorations.

This fiery and stylistic work has all of Carol's rhythmic charm infused with the energy of the Lone Star State! "Fandango" is an exciting new addition to the concert band medium with lots of great moments to show off your ensemble's musicianship!

This grade 2 contest and festival piece will dazzle with musical sleight-of-hand! Jaunty rhythms and unexpected harmonies give Smoke and Mirrors a mysterious and playful quality that portrays the ability of a magician to create the inexplicable. Fanfare for the Fearless is a dynamic fanfare by Brian Balmages celebrating those willing to take risks in an effort to grow musically, personally, or academically. Powerful melodic statements contrast with shifting tonal centers and pulsating rhythmic hits. Audiences will be stunned by the complexity of the music, yet it is quite accessible to younger players!
