SATB, Octavo On this night is an adaptation of the middle movement of Will Todd's three-movement choral suite Praise all things, which was written in 2019 for Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Texas. This alternative Christmas lyric was created by Todd for this piece as a stand-alone for the 2025 album 'All Will Be Well'. The glowing jazzy melody inspired the lyrics celebrating the Christmas message. It can be performed by SATB choirs (no divisi) with just piano accompaniment using the part in this vocal score, or extemporised using the given chord symbols, or with an ensemble of piano, bass, drums, alto saxophone, harp and strings (full score and parts available as digital downloads).

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo A setting of an anonymous Old English Carol (We saw the light shine out afar, On Christmas in the morning'), subtitled of Melchior, Balthazar, and Caspar, the Three Kings', The Golden Carol tells of the kings' adoration of the Christ child on that first Christmas morning. The wonder and emotional breadth of the text is brought to life through a steady build up through the two verses, in dynamic levels but also in harmonic language. Homophonic throughout, drawing influence from Bach chorales, the peaceful opening stanzas only hint at the jazz-inspired harmony which Ponniah frequently deploys in his works. More complexity, dissonance and divisi are gradually introduced until the outpouring of emotion at the climax of the piece And see in heaven, our glorious home, The Star of Christmas morning.'

SATB a cappella, Octavo The words of Edith Reed's translation of this traditional Polish poem wonderfully encapsulate the Christmas message. I love the way that the text captures the innocence and humbleness of the nativity and how the repeated motif of Christ as both babe and Lord underlines the mystery of the incarnation and forms a signpost towards the radical, unworldly nature of God's rule. For me, it was an obvious choice of text for a carol composition. I attempted to write an uncomplicated melody highlighting the lowliness of the stable scene and thus the verses open with a gently lilting tune, with simple harmony, which intensifies chromatically as the piece progresses, climaxing at the setting of the words 'Christ the Babe is Lord'. At the end, a gentler, slower rendition of 'Christ the Babe was born for you' conveys the more personal nature of the text; this cosmic event finds relevance and application most potently in the life of the individual, 'you'. The piece should be sung expressively, making the most of the suspensions in the alto and tenor parts, with more of a feeling of forward movement at the 'swift are winging' section.

SATB, Octavo Written for the 2025 BBC Radio 3 Epiphany Carol Service, broadcast from Pembroke College, Cambridge, 'Arise, shine' sets the first three verses of Isaiah 60: 'Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you'. A gentle opening, with lower voices echoing upper to build harmonies and a sense of tension, gives way to a dramatic crescendo as God's glory rises. A similar idea is explored as the 'glory appears over you', though with the lower voices taking the lead. Between these two eruptions, and in the extended concluding section of the piece, are mediative homophonic moments, with slow moving harmonies and hushed voices. The final section's simple harmonies subside to unison voices as they declare 'Nations shall come to your light and kings to the brightness of your dawn.' For dividing SATB voices with a straightforward organ accompaniment, this piece would be suitable for intermediate choirs looking to enhance their sacred repertoire in worship or concert.

SATB, Octavo Seeking You was commissioned by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, where Briggs held a three year tenure as composer-in-residence. The text by Charles Anthony Silvestri tells of a weary traveller who journeys to meet the Christ Child in the manger, but also features an alternative secular version which could refer to the traveller at the deathbed of their long-beloved.

SSAA, Octavo Commissioned in 2024 by Ensemble Altera for the choir's critically acclaimed album 'Feminine Voices at Christmas', Kerensa Briggs's setting of the Coventry Carol ('Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child') is written for upper voices (dividing into four parts), with an additional soprano solo and harp (or piano) accompaniment. A deeply reflective, reverent and fresh setting of this well-known text, with gentle dissonance and beautiful shape, this carol is suitable for intermediate to advanced upper-voice choirs looking to add a moment of calm wonder in their Christmas concert or service.

SATB, Octavo The third movement of Kim André Arnesen's Nordic Christmas, a collection of new arrangements of carols originating in Nordic countries. This carol captures the mood of Christmas Eve in those countries when, under the dark blue skies, people are lit by Christmas candles. In the darkest time of the year in this part of the world, the message that God has sent Jesus Christ to the world goes to every heart that's cold and dark, and, as Bethlehem's star once led the wise men, Jesus will be our guiding light. This beautiful and evocative carol was written by Emmy Köhler in 1898. It has become one of the most popular ones in Sweden in churches, at schools and at home, and appeared in various songbooks. In 1943 the carol was chosen by the King to be one of the mandatory songs that schoolchildren in Sweden had to sing by heart. Arnesen's beautiful arrangement for intermediate SATB choir, with limited divisi, and piano (or ensemble) accompaniment can be performed in a Nordic language or English

SSATB, Octavo There is no rose is the second movement of Kristina Arakelyan's nine-movement work, A Christmas Offering, a festive celebration scored for SATB chorus with harp (or piano) taking inspiration from Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols. It was first performed in 2024 at Snape Maltings by Pembroke College Chapel Choir and Anna Lapwood. Like Britten, Arakelyan draws her texts from medieval carols in Latin and early English, which not only tell the nativity story, but also look ahead to Christ's suffering and crucifixion. The musical language itself often alludes to a medieval sound world, but with a contemporary twist and drawing on her own Armenian heritage and other Eastern influences, Arakelyan brings the texts to life in this exciting new collection of carols. Also available for upper voices (SSA).

SATB divisi, Octavo A setting of one of the seven O Antiphons, O Adonai is built upon an ostinato figure on a single note which starts and ends the composition, initially using the words of the title. Acting as a drone which is expanded within the texture, this musical idea is inspired by the act of prayer, mirroring the words of this antiphon which ask for redemption.

SATB, Octavo Two narratives are interspersed in Christmas Lullaby. The first one is a mother singing a lullaby to her son, and the second one is the larger narrative of Jesus Christ's life, as told through the text of the Bible. Arakelyan wrote this carol just a few months after her own son's birth. Naturally, lullabies were at the forefront of the composer's mind at the time and made a lovely connecting point to the nativity story! With works paraphrased from the gospels of John and Luke, interspersed with text by the composer, Christmas Lullaby is an approachable carol for SATB choir and piano with minimal divisi in the upper vocal parts.
