Commissioned by the Bishop Ireton Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Alexandria, Virginia) under the direction of Garwood Whaley, the work reflects Maslanka's desire to capture the elemental force of the land through music.

Built upon J.S. Bach's chorale O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (No. 98 from the 371 Four-Part Chorales), the piece transforms the timeless hymn into a deeply expressive set of variations.
