Score and Part, Softcover After returning to the countryside from London, Edward Elgar earned a living from 1890 onwards primarily as a violin teacher albeit out of necessity, since he was unable to make a living from composing. He found his daily life monotonous; in 1891, he apparently hoped to find fresh inspiration through the purchase of a violin from the workshop of the Italian maker Nicolò Gagliano. Filled with enthusiasm by his new instrument, he composed for himself La Capricieuse, a virtuoso bravura piece which was practically tailor-made for his Gagliano. According to a sketch, the piece was initially to be aptly titled Le Staccato, but capricious captures the character of this popular encore number exceptionally well. Rupert Marshall-Luck now presents a Henle Urtext edition ofthis masterstroke, thus making it accessible for practical use. A showpiece also for advanced students!

Score and Part, Softcover After Elgar achieved huge success with the publication of Salut damour, in 1889 he attempted to establish himself in London and to live as a freelance artist. However, he was not able to gain a proper foothold, which is why the Elgars moved back to the countryside in Malvern in 1891. There, the composer had a steady flow of students and was able to make a good living as a violin teacher. The Very Easy Melodious Exercises for violin and piano date from this time. Originally composed for his niece, May Grafton, they reflect Elgars renewed interest in teaching. Traces of this activity are displayed in the autograph, which was apparently used in violin lessons and contains numerous fingerings that are missing from the edition published in 1892. In his Urtext edition, British Elgar expert and violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck documents these details in his usual meticulous manner, and in this way creates a newly verified musical text of this classic for violin teaching.

Performance Score, Softcover Thanks to a royal privilege, French composer Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was able to publish and disseminate his works himself, which is why they quickly found their way into the teaching and performance repertoire in the eighteenth century. Duos for two equal bass instruments, such as the nine Petites Sonates op. 66 followed by a concluding chaconne, were as popular then as they are today: The short movements with dance-like character allow beginners to play together already early on and offer advanced players the opportunity for imaginative embellishment and stylistic presentation of the merely rudimentarily notated musical text. In accordance with the original edition published in 1737, the Henle Urtext edition presents the duos in score form, whereby the spontaneous switching of parts in the repeats of the individual sections is possible. Included to assist beginner cellists is a second score with fingerings and bowings by the experienced pedagogue Thomas Klein - thus, nothing stands in the way of musical njoyment!

Softcover The eleventh Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, is based on four themes of Hungarian character whose origins have not yet been determined: Liszt may have noted them down by ear during his trip to Hungary in 1846. Introduced by a soft tremolo quasi cimbalo, a folk-like song, a dance and two csárdás compositions are heard one after the other, whereby echoes of the then popular so-called gypsy bands are unmistakable. In a manner unique even within the cosmos of the Rhapsody series, the tempo is increased in each new section and the piano texture becomes denser. Parallel to this, the harmonic scope widens, whereby the journey leads from A minor through A major to the brilliant stretta in F-sharp major. For the Urtext edition, which for the first time also takes into account the preserved autograph, two renowned Liszt specialists could once again be engaged: Mária Eckhardt for the preface and Vincenzo Maltempo for the fingerings.

Score and Part, Softcover Carl Maria von Weber's bassoon concerto owes its existence to his 1811 sojourn in Munich, where he enjoyed great success at court as a pianist and, above all, as a composer - The whole orchestra has taken leave of their senses and want to have concertos from me, he reported. Besides the two clarinet concertos and the concertino for his friend Heinrich Baermann, the bassoon concerto for Friedrich Brandt, principal bassoonist of the Munich Court Orchestra, was also composed there in November 1811. With its joie de vivre, its wit and the enchantingly lyrical middle movement, Weber's concerto quickly gained great popularity and today, together with Mozarts bassoon concerto, numbers among the essential repertoire works for this instrument. Evaluated for the present new edition were Webers autograph, the manuscript engraver's copy and Weber's authorised first edition. It was thereby possible to undo countless distorting encroachments in the posthumously published piano reduction of 1870, on which to the present day the majority of editions are based. With that, one of the most important works in bassoon literature is finally available in reliable Henle Urtext quality the new reference edition for study and teaching!

Softcover It is the spirit which holds together noble and better men on this earth that is now addressed to you, Beethoven wrote thus to the dedicatee of the Sonata op. 109, the ninteen-year-old Maximiliane Brentano in 1821. Beethoven had already composed a little piano trio (B flat major WoO 39) for her in 1812. And now she was receiving a very different kind of work - the first of the heavyweight last three piano sonatas. It remains astounding that Beethoven initially wrote the first movement as a piano work in its own right, only later decided to expand it into a complete sonata, which today appears to have been hewn from one piece of stone.
