Solo Flute, The Danish flautist and composer Andersen was one of the founder members of the Berlin Philharmonic, and for 10 years was the orchestra's 1st flute. He toured extensively (including Russia and America) and shared a platform with artists like Hans von Bülow and Joseph Joachim. In addition to his performing career he also wrote studies for flute, instructive as well as musically attractive, which have become part of the standard works used in teaching. Further pieces by Andersen for flute and piano have been published by Schott in The Andersen Collection (EA 748).

SSAATTBB, Octavo This work for solo soprano, solo cello and mixed chorus (SATB with divisi) was first performed at the University College Dublin Foundation Day celebration in November 2013, and later recorded by the Choral Scholars of UCD, directed by Desmond Early (SIGCD436). Dedicated to Dr Hugh Brady, former President of UCD, the musical painting of the text evokes the wonder and possibility of life. Whispering choral writing supports a dialogue between soprano and cello, with the reflective nature of water suggested in the homophonic conclusion of each verse.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo Stars Above, Earth Below is a hopeful and reflective setting of the poem Leaves by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). The piece begins with celestial, descending lines across the vocal parts to represent each falling leaf as, one by one, like leaves from a tree, all my faiths have forsaken me. The piece then moves from reflection to revelation as the music opens out, looking up to the stars and down to the earth, observing the beauty of the natural world around us. The work is introspective, lamenting over the loss of the leaves I knew, but it ultimately turns into understated promise as the little leaves that die, have left me room to see the sky, depicting transformation through loss, from one season to the next. The piece returns to the celestial, ethereal falling lines at its conclusion, expressing appreciation for the beauty of the stars above, earth below.

SATB divisi, Octavo 'I am a pool' is taken from 'A Memory of the Ocean' (2023), a collection of pieces scored for choir, piano and cello. The text is a setting of The Sea-Wind by American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). Commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, the piece is reflective and expansive, depicting the vast breadth of the sea with sweeping cello lines interjecting throughout the work. The entry of the piano, delicate and glinting, anticipates and represents the ocean's sparkly surface, the sound of the sea itself. For intermediate to advanced choirs. SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo An evocative a cappella setting of Ivor Gurney's words to his song 'Severn Meadows', likely written in the First World War trenches in 1917. Commissioned in 2022 for Cantores Chamber Choir, this new, hauntingly beautiful setting captures the poet's longing for home, transporting the audience to the English countryside while the words tug at the heartstrings. A solo soprano line is weaved with broad, lush harmonies to create a memorable work, offering a rewarding challenge to intermediate-advanced choirs.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo 'Echo' is the third movement of 'Seascapes', which was commissioned by the BBC Singers, as companion music to the 'Four Sea Interludes' by Benjamin Britten, arranged for the organ by Anna Lapwood. It was premiered at Temple Church by the BBC Singers, conducted by Ben Palmer, on 7 October. The four movements of 'Seascapes' take the four Britten movements as inspiration, seen through the prism of Arakelyan's musical language. Ranging from the painful lyricism of the third movement, Echo, to the wild energy of the final movement, Storm Wind, the musical syntax, including the melodies, structure and tonal centres are presented as a homage. The poems by Christina Rossetti were chosen to reflect the narrative themes of Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes', from which the 'Four Sea Interludes' are taken. The compositions can be paired with the Four Sea Interludes or performed as standalone pieces.

SSA, Octavo A setting of Christina Rossetti's poem Dream Land, the raw emotional quality of Dreamland reflects on the beautiful imagery and themes of fantasy and death of the poem. Written in the Autumn of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the difficulties of those months are reflected in the sorrowful and transcendent nature of the melodic lines, which are supported by a flowing piano line. Although it was imagined as a song, initially Dreamland was called 'Rhapsody' and written as a ballet score for piano and wind quintet. Versions for piano solo and organ solo also exist.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo As an accessible and versatile opener or introit, this piece sets an uplifting verse of poetry by Nigerian poet Ozioma Ogbaji. Though not overtly sacred, the spiritual message of the text is hopeful and empowering, and this is reflected in the brightness of the musical scenery. A denser central section with close, chromatic lines bridges two outer phrases which are characterised by the sweeping leaps and warm harmonies of the opening. 'Today' was composed in December 2020, and aims to serve as a brief but poignant musical reminder that hope can overcome struggle.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo There will come soft rains' would suit experienced choral groups as a concert piece, particularly for occasions of contemplation, remembrance, war and peace, and perceptions of the natural world.if in several guises throughout the piece, from crystalline fragility to radiating strength. The text is profound; Sara Teasdale's poem (subtitled 'War time') juxtaposes the tranquil cycle of nature and personified awakening of Spring against the suffering of mankind, with a simultaneous sense of comfort and unnerving indifference. Musically, this is evoked through a central moment of descent into harsh dissonance, from which the opening melody emerges, seemingly unchanged. Though the piece closes with a light, hopeful sound, there is an unsettling undertone.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo Commissioned by Peter Asprey and premiered by the Choir of Holy Sepulchre, London, for St Cecilia's Day 2024, O Sing to the Lord is a joyful setting of Psalm 96. Built from a single opening melody, the vocal lines weave together in vibrant contrapuntal dialogue, celebrating the shared joy of singing. Perfect as an introit or concert opener, this energetic work is ideal for experienced choirs.

SSATB, Octavo In August 2024, Lucy Walker travelled to Lindisfarne with St Martin's Voices for a festival of services and music to mark St Aidan's Day. There the choir premiered 'Make me an Island', an introspective and heartfelt setting of Andy Raine's popular 'St Aidan's Prayer'. The music, while simple, captures the timeless essence and rich spiritual lore of the island, with a gentle melodic arc that mimics the ebb and flow of waves on the shore. Imitation and overlap between vocal lines provide momentum, and allow for more exploratory and energised harmonies in the second section, representing 'the turning of the tide'. The message of the prayer, peaceful solitude in the face of the 'busy world', is present throughout in the reflective atmosphere, and a soprano solo in the final section soars above the choir, characterising the one voice among many. This piece has no split parts, and would suit choirs of mixed ability, as an anthem or concert piece, particularly resonating with themes of rest, peace, remembrance, or solace in the natural world.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo Commissioned by the Choir of Wells Cathedral for the installation of the Reverend Canon Toby Wright as Dean of Wells in 2024, Love Flows sets a luminous text by Mechthild of Magdeburg. Flowing melodies, radiant harmonies, and moments of stillness create an atmosphere of quiet transcendence, making the work especially effective in resonant spaces. Ideal for experienced choirs, it is well suited as either an anthem or a concert work.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo Ave virgo sanctissima was commissioned by Robert Sharpe and the Choir of York Minster, for the service of Nine Lessons and Carols in 2023. The text is a lyrical prayer which praises the virtue of Mary with grand and opulent language; musically, this is echoed by a florid and warm soundworld. After a gentle opening section with flowing melodic lines, the music takes on a more tender, fragile mood, to evoke the floral metaphors which express Mary's delicate beauty. Ideas from the opening return, expanding to fill the full range of the choir, with rich bass notes and soaring treble lines. This final gesture aims to capture the resplendence of the text. The piece closes with a soft melody which floats skywards into the upper voices. This setting would suit an experienced choir as an anthem or concert piece, originally intended for the Christmas season, but equally fit for occasions throughout the year as a devotional piece.

SATB divisi, Octavo This anthem was commissioned in 2012 by Simon Winters to celebrate 20 years of the chamber choir Felicitas. Thinking about the unaccompanied vocal texture brought me back to my 1995 setting of the words of The Venerable Bede, Christus Est Stella, which in turn made me think of the beautiful words of Vidi speciosam. The setting seeks to convey the ecstatic nature of the text, set almost exclusively in a homophonic style; the harmonies are rich and opulent like the text. When performing this work, the overall effect must always be smooth and sustained (staggered breathing is recommended) and the crescendi must never lose the overall balance of the chords if possible.

SATB divisi, Octavo O sacrum convivium was written in 2007 - it is one of my earliest choral compositions. Olivier Messiaen's setting had a profound impact on me as a young chorister. As John Cooper, the then Choirmaster of St Mary-le-Tower Church, read through and discussed the translation of this Latin text, I was starting to connect Messiaen's intoxicating, yet somehow purifying, musical choices with the colour and smell of communion wine (I had not been confirmed at this stage). Having become interested in jazz piano, I decided to compose my own setting of this transcendent text, blending holy minimalism, rich jazz-infused harmonies and impressionism.

SATB divisi a cappella, Octavo Inspired by the rugged Cornish coast and Percy Bysshe Shelley's beloved poem, To a Skylark captures the soaring flight and radiant song of the skylark through shimmering rhythms, vivid dissonance, and sweeping melodic lines. As danger quietly lurks beneath, the bird's joyful voice rises above it all before giving way to a reflective, expressive ending that lingers in peaceful stillness. This evocative concert work offers choirs a compelling musical journey that is both exhilarating and deeply moving.
