Commissioned and premiered in 1949 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to honor Dr. Serge Koussevitsky for 25 years of directorship. Roaring ascending scales in the accompaniment reflect the great strength of this Old Testament text. The popularity of this anthem is surpassed only by Thompson's Alleluia.

The short, beautiful poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is given a magnified setting for six-part unaccompanied voices. With fluid lines and enriching harmonies, this work is a masterful illustration of bringing poetry to life with painting a musical picture, with voices depicting gently-blowing wind and swirling snow (among other aspects) on the mountaintop. A polyrhythmic middle section creates quite the challenge for even the most advanced of scholastic choral ensembles. Vocal Score, Softcover In 1960, James V. Hatch and his UCLA colleague C. Bernard Jackson, collaborated to write the civil rights musical Fly Blackbird. Inspired by the student sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina, the growing movement for civil and human rights, and the pursuit of justice for African Americans throughout the United States, the production reflected the times and the means by which they believed change would come to American society. Opening at the Metropolitan Theater in Los Angeles in 1961, the multiracial cast and underlying message of the production challenged young people to stand up and use their voices to affect change. Fly Blackbird became a call to arms for students on the UCLA campus to join the movement, and won the 1962 Obie Award for Best Musical. Octavo The work is written from an old Icelandic psalm by Olafur á Söndum (1560-1627).There are 52 verses in the psalm - four of them are used in this piece.

Many anecdotes surround String Quartet op. 131: Beethoven is said to have considered it to be his finest quartet and of his late period works, the one dearest to his heart. It is also believed that the composer invested so much of himself in it; his ailing health, the social isolation brought about by his deafness and the suicide attempt of his nephew Karl. In addition it was reported that Franz Schubert asked to hear this piece once more on his deathbed.

Even if these anecdotes are not all true, they reveal what generations of musicians felt they heard in this quartet: Beethoven’s most personal musical idiom and a vulnerable message from the final period of his life.

This new edition by Jonathan Del Mar represents a thorough revision of this highly complex work. Meticulously incorporated are Beethoven’s pencil markings that were previously almost completely ignored.

The one-movement, approximately twelve-minute Sonata for Horn and Piano op. 2 by Miloslav Kabeláč (1908–1979) is characterised by a high concentration of musical ideas and great expressiveness. The composer explores the dramatic and virtuosic potential of the horn, but also places considerable demands on the pianist.

The sonata was composed in 1935 and 1936. Three months after a live radio broadcast, the work was given its world premiere by the same performers – hornist Josef Schwarz and pianist Berta Kabeláčová-Rixová – at a concert at the Smetana Museum in Prague on 28 January 1938.

The rediscovery of the forgotten and never-before-published horn sonata is thanks to pianist Robert Kolinsky and principal horn of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Stefan Dohr, who recorded the work on the CD “Miloslav Kabeláč: Complete Chamber Music” (Capriccio 2024).

Based on the autograph score and solo part, which are held at the National Museum – Czech Music Museum in Prague, the sonata appears here in print for the first time – as part of the “Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Miloslav Kabeláč”.
